Replacement interval guide
Ford recommend replacement every 60000 miles or 5 years whichever the soonest
Removal =
1 ) raise and support front of vehicle
2 ) support engine
3 ) remove:
RH front wheel
RH inner wing panel
RH engine mounting
Aux drive belts
Water pump pulley
Crankshaft pulley bolt [1]
Crankshaft pulley [2]
HT leads
Cylinder head cover
Dipstick and tube [3]
Timing belt covers [4]
4 ) temporarily fit bolt and washer to retain crankshaft sprocket [1]
5 ) turn crankshaft to TDC on no.1 cylinder
6 ) ensure timing marks aligned [5] and [6]
note: timing marks on rear of camshaft sprockets align with cylinder head upper face
7 ) hold tensioner pulley [7]. use allen key [8]. disconnect tensioner spring from pin [9]
8 ) turn tensioner pulley anti-clockwise to release tension on belt.
9 ) remove timing belt
installation =
1 ) ensure timing marks aligned [5] and [6]
2 ) fit timing belt in anti clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
3 ) turn tensioner pulley clockwise [7]. use allen key [8].
4 ) connect tensioner spring to pin [9] ensure belt is tensioned
5 ) turn crankshaft slowly two turns clockwise to TDC on no.1 cylinder
6 ) ensure timing marks aligned [5] and [6]
7 ) remove crankshaft pulley bolt and washer [1]
8 ) install components in reverse order of removal.
9 ) tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [1]. tightening torque 157-166 Nm
Before you take the auxiliary belts off, make sure you undo the waterpump pully bolts (4 of them - 10mm bolts) just loosen them off, because if you don't, you will be there for a month of sundays trying to undo them.
Also - [8]. disconnect tensioner spring from pin You don't have to do this! I've done 4 x 16v cam belts and never had to remove the spring.
There is also a ''camlock'' tool you can buy that locks the cams in place, so if you could find this, it would be very helpfull.
